WELCOME

According to the 2020 US Census, there are an estimated 294,951 members of the lesbian & gay* community above age 45  living in the four largest counties of North Texas (Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, & Denton).  According to the census, 27% of all people ages 65+ live alone.  Many programs have been developed for non-LGBT aging citizens; however, access to these programs for LGBT citizens is a challenge because of continued discrimination and the inability or unwillingness of LGBT persons to go back into the closet.
*Because the U.S. Census does not ask questions related to transgender or bi-sexual identities, it is not possible to estimate the number of persons in those communities.

Our Mission
Improve and protect the quality of life of older LGBT adults in North Texas through community engagement and advocacy education.

We've been serving the aging LGBT community since 2015. Our mission is to promote personal well-being, dignity and autonomy through the delivery of high quality, affordable and culturally competent home and community-based care from our affiliate organizations. We are working with involved LGBT and Aging Organizations (locally and nationally) to create comprehensive programs to address the unique needs of the LGBT Aging Community.
The challenges facing the aging LGBT individuals are real, and will ultimately affect the vast majority of the LGBT community.  We are taking immediate action to create programs and make cultural changes to insure the quality of life and dignity. The improvements we make will benefit the 6 generations currently living in the United States.  Explore our site...learn more about the issues and the leadership team working to improve the lives of the LGBT Community in North Texas.

Some of the unique problems/challenges facing the mature LGBT community:

  • Loneliness due to loss of life partner or long term relationship
  • No children for many members of the community and limited family to provide care and companionship
  • Loss interest in personal enrichment activities outside the home due to limited (or no) sense of community and/or companionship
  • Travel (in an open-and-accepting environment)
  • Arts & Crafts
  • Culinary Skills (eating well as we age)
  • Limited or no LGBT welcoming transitional living facilities
  • Lack of social settings or groups, (not into the bar scene or many venues suited for younger members of the community)
  • Unique financial and legal situations that members face (due to no protection through traditional marriage rights)
  • Possible poor diet due to eating alone and loss of interest,
  • No link between the young and the mature members of the community – a need for mentoring and relationship building
  • Understanding the stages of the aging process and how that may be unique [for LGBT people]
  • Grief counseling oriented toward this population
